Scentwork Classes -
Scentwork Classes will teach you how to teach your dog the sport of AKC Scentwork. Our Lead Instructor has competed (and won) at the highest levels of AKC Scentwork - Detective, countless times over! Our Assistant Instructors have competed and titled at various levels, including multiple High In Trial winners.
*Please Note - Not all classes are available every session.
BEGINNER SW Class - This is for dogs that are NOT on odor or are having difficulty responding to odor. The class will incorporate games and multiple ways of introducing the dog to odor and cementing a delight in finding odor. This class is geared towards giving handlers a basic understanding of their role in a SW team. The primary goal of this class is to make the dog familiar with all of the odors used in area SW and teach them that finding odor is a game they WANT to play with their handler!
NOVICE LEVEL SW Class - Teams will perform simple, accessible, one-hide searches and be introduced to all four AKC Elements (Interior, Container, Exterior, Buried). Driving to source, effective search strategies, and odor theory are covered.
ADVANCED LEVEL SW Class - Teams will be introduced to multiple hide searches, complex hides, distraction work, elevation, thresholds and inaccessible hides. Odor theory, leash handling and dog/handler awareness are covered.
EXCELLENT LEVEL SW Class - This is an ongoing class, and due to its complexity, specific problems may comprise the majority of a given session. Odor theory is stressed. Specific scent problems are addressed, such as inaccessible hides, threshold hides, converging odor problems, mirror image hides, gravel hides, etc. Blank areas are worked. Distractions are increased, both in their quantity and quality.
MASTER & DETECTIVE LEVEL SW Class - This is another ongoing class, and due to its complexity, specific problems may comprise the majority of a given session. Odor theory is stressed. Specific scent problems are addressed, such as inaccessible hides, threshold hides, converging odor problems, mirror image hides, high corner hides, suspended hides, shallow ground hides, gravel hides, etc. Blank areas are worked. Distractions are increased, both in their quantity and quality. This class may also have some off site sessions but students will be notified in advance. Class will cover Buried "in the ground", and if the weather cooperates - "running water" hides! This will be a challenging class and is intended for teams at the levels stated or those with an imminent start at those levels!
CONCEPTS IN SCENTWORK - Concepts and odor theory are stressed. The use of smoke bombs in understanding multiple scent problems may be utilized! This class is not restricted to upper levels and can benefit Novice and Advanced dogs, although it is appropriate to levels Excellent and above. This class may also have some off site sessions but students will be notified in advance.
For All Classes -
Students should bring their dog, a crate, a water bowl, a plain non-restrictive collar or harness, a leash at least 6 feet long, several types of treats and doggie waste bags (you will be required to clean up after your dog).
Class costs are $75 for WKC Members, $85 for Non-Members per 6 week session, per dog/handler team.
Junior Handlers receive half off the published price.
Handlers may have more than one dog in a class, however class sizes are limited and each additional dog is an additional fee.

Canine Good Citizen Classes - CGC, CGCA, CGCU
Canine Good Citizen (CGC) -
The Canine Good Citizen is a 10-skill test that teaches good manners to dogs and responsible dog ownership to their owners.
CGC is open to all dogs–purebred and mixed breed. There are no age minimums or limits for participating in the Canine Good Citizen program, because yes, you can always teach an old dog new tricks!
Community Canine (CGCA) -
The AKC Community Canine program is all about ensuring you have a well-behaved dog while you’re out and about in the community. Where CGC happens in a simulated environment, the 10-step AKC Community Canine test is conducted in real life situations—like walking on a busy sidewalk or through a local park–giving you and your dog the confidence to enjoy everyday to the fullest, no matter what comes your way.
Urban CGC (CGCU) -
Another step beyond the basic CGC test is the AKC Urban CGC title, which tests your CGC skills in an active city or town setting. There are 10-steps to the test that your dog must pass to earn the official AKC Urban CGC title, but it is administered in a place where there are cars, streets to be crossed, noises, and fast-paced distractions..
Class runs for 6 weeks, approximately an hour a week with the AKC Test administered the last night of class.

Barn Hunt Practices -
The WKC is pleased to offer practices for BARN HUNT! In Barn Hunt the dogs hunt rats, which are safely enclosed in "dog-proof" ventilated tubes which are hidden in straw bales. The rats are never harmed, but the dogs enjoy hunting them anyway!
Rules vary for different skill levels, but dogs must be able to differentiate between "live tubes" (which contain a rat) and tubes containing used rat litter and blank tubes in a given period of time. The dogs must also complete a climb onto the straw bales and negotiate a tunnel through the bales!
WKC is offering practices at all levels (including "Meet The Rat" for those new to the sport) - we now have enough rats to offer MASTER & CRAZY 8s. Prices are per practice so you can come to those that fit your schedule, or come to all of them and become a pro!
Practice fees will be used to further the club's aim to hold a Barn Hunt trial.
Location - Simone Klein's Farm, Rural Douglas Area, address provided when you register for a practice.
