Classes - Conformation & Scentwork & CGC

Watch this area (and our WKC Facebook page) for more information!

Scentwork Classes -
Scentwork Classes will teach you how to teach your dog the sport of AKC Scentwork. Our Lead Instructor has competed (and won) at the highest levels of AKC Scentwork - Detective. Twice!
Our Assistant Instructors have competed and titled at various levels.

*Please Note - Not all classes are available every session. Please check with the Instructors for available class dates and times.

BEGINNER SW Class - This is for dogs that are NOT on odor or are having difficulty responding to odor. The class will incorporate games and multiple ways of introducing the dog to odor and cementing a delight in finding odor. This class is geared towards giving handlers a basic understanding of their role in a SW team. The primary goal of this class is to make the dog familiar with all of the odors used in area SW and teach them that finding odor is a game they WANT to play with their handler!

NOVICE SW Class - Teams will perform simple, accessible, one-hide searches and be introduced to all Elements for all venues (sic Interior, Container, Exterior, Buried, and Vehicles). Driving to source, effective search strategies, and odor theory are covered.

INTERMEDIATE SW Class - Teams will be introduced to multiple hide searches, more complex hides, distraction work, and Handler Discrimination. This class is appropriate for teams planning to trial.

ADVANCED SW Class - This is an ongoing class, and due to its complexity, specific problems may comprise the majority of a given session. Odor theory is stressed. Specific scent problems are addressed, such as inaccessible hides, threshold hides, converging odor problems, mirror image hides, high corner hides, suspended hides, shallow ground hides, gravel hides, etc. Blank areas are worked. Distractions are increased, both in their quantity and quality. This class is suitable for teams that are already competing.

TAKING IT ON THE ROAD Class - This class is seasonal and may be taken in conjunction with other classes offered during the same session. Class is held in multiple and varying areas. Definite trial prep class!

SPECIAL EVENTS - WKC is pleased to be able to offer occasional Snif-N-Go practices, SW Fun Days, and AKC Sanctioned SW Trials. Keep an eye on the website and Facebook page for full details.

Special Events

Barn Hunt Intro Lecture Series

The WKC is pleased to be able to start offering classes and practices for BARN HUNT! Barn Hunt is a popular event created to allow all dogs, urban, suburban, or farm dwelling, a chance to indulge their innate desire to sniff things out and satisfy their instinct for hunting at the same time! The dogs hunt rats, which are safely enclosed in "dog-proof" ventilated tubes which are hidden in straw bales. The rats are never harmed, but the dogs enjoy hunting them anyway!
Rules vary for different skill levels, but dogs must be able to differentiate between "live tubes" (which contain a rat) and tubes containing used rat litter and blank tubes in a given period of time. The dogs must also complete a climb onto the straw bales and negotiate a tunnel through the bales!
We will have a short series of lectures on what to expect at a Barn Hunt, and what the levels and rules are, beginning on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at 730PM.
Introductory lectures are 10$ for members and 15$ for non-members. Please email Matthew Huhnke at mhuhnke71@cox.net, Charlotte Norris at charlotte.norrisnot64@gmail.com, or Tari Ernst at ioerger51@cox.net to sign up for lectures!

Please check the website or our FB Page to see additional lecture dates and times as they become available, and to see who to contact to attend "Meet the Rat" classes and practices when they begin!

Meet The Breeds

WKC participates in "Meet the Breeds" events held during the Kansas State Fair each year in September. Meet The Breeds (MTB) is a chance for the general public to get up close and personal with a wide variety of purebred dogs and their owners/breeders. MTB gives you a chance to interact with each specific breed and to ask questions to see if it might fit your lifestyle.

Meet the Breeds at the Kansas State Fair was a huge success and we hope to see you there in 2023!

Microchip Clinic

WKC hosts a low cost microchip clinic in mid-September of each year, coinciding with AKC's Responsible Dog Ownership Day.
