Fast CAT Test - September 24-25, 2022

WKC will hold it's inaugural Fast Cat tests on September 24 and 25, 2022. There will be two tests each day, for a total of four tests. Terminology can be confusing, you might hear this referred to as a trial, a test, a run, a Q or an event. Simply put, this is a 100 yard dash for your dog to earn points towards the Fast Cat titles such as BCat. Be sure to read the entire premium for all the details. This event is limited so enter early!

Conformation Classes -
Conformation Classes are a great way to learn the basics of dog show handling and introducing you and your dog to the AKC show ring. Instructors are accomplished Owner-Handlers who have shown at the highest levels.

Students should bring their dog, a conformation leash, bait (super treats) and doggie waste bags (you will be required to clean up after your dog on the WKC grounds). Dogs must be current on vaccinations (bring proof to the first class). Dogs and Puppies 3 months of age and up are welcome.

Classes are held for one hour, once a week, for a 6 week session, at the WKC building. Classes are $55 for members and $65 for non-members. Class size is limited. Classes tend to fill before they even make it to the website (wow, now that's demand!) - please contact Liz to get on her waiting list for the next class.

Scentwork Classes -
Scentwork Classes will teach you how to teach your dog the sport of AKC Scentwork. Our Lead Instructor has competed (and won) at the highest levels of AKC Scentwork - Detective. Twice!
Our Assistant Instructors have competed and titled at various levels.

*Please Note - Not all classes are available every session. Please check with the Instructors for available class dates and times.

BEGINNER SW Class - This is for dogs that are NOT on odor or are having difficulty responding to odor. The class will incorporate games and multiple ways of introducing the dog to odor and cementing a delight in finding odor. This class is geared towards giving handlers a basic understanding of their role in a SW team. The primary goal of this class is to make the dog familiar with all of the odors used in area SW and teach them that finding odor is a game they WANT to play with their handler!
Contact Lori Hays, hayslori@yahoo.com or 316-312-2802 (leave a message) for information or to enroll.

NOVICE SW Class - Teams will perform simple, accessible, one-hide searches and be introduced to all Elements for all venues (sic Interior, Container, Exterior, Buried, and Vehicles). Driving to source, effective search strategies, and odor theory are covered.

INTERMEDIATE SW Class - Teams will be introduced to multiple hide searches, more complex hides, distraction work, and Handler Discrimination. This class is appropriate for teams planning to trial.

ADVANCED SW Class - This is an ongoing class, and due to its complexity, specific problems may comprise the majority of a given session. Odor theory is stressed. Specific scent problems are addressed, such as inaccessible hides, threshold hides, converging odor problems, mirror image hides, high corner hides, suspended hides, shallow ground hides, gravel hides, etc. Blank areas are worked. Distractions are increased, both in their quantity and quality. This class is suitable for teams that are already competing.

TAKING IT ON THE ROAD Class - This class is seasonal and may be taken in conjunction with other classes offered during the same session. Class is held in multiple and varying areas. Definite trial prep class!

SPECIAL EVENTS - WKC is pleased to be able to offer occasional Snif-N-Go practices, SW Fun Days, and AKC Sanctioned SW Trials. Keep an eye on the website and Facebook page for full details.

For All Classes -
Students should bring their dog, a crate, a water bowl, a plain non-restrictive collar or harness, a leash at least 6 feet long, several types of treats
and doggie waste bags (you will be required to clean up after your dog on the WKC grounds).

Class sizes are limited. Class costs are $65 for WKC Members, $75 for Non-Members per session. Each session is 6 weeks long and class runs for approximately two hours once a week. Classes tend to fill before they ever make it to the website (they're in demand!) - please contact Charlotte to get on the waiting list for the next sessions.

Special Events

Microchip Clinic

WKC hosts a low cost microchip clinic in mid-September of each year, coinciding with AKC's Responsible Dog Ownership Day. We look to the future and hope to hold one in 2023.

Meet The Breeds

WKC participates in "Meet the Breeds" events held during the Kansas State Fair each year in September. Meet The Breeds (MTB) is a chance for the general public to get up close and personal with a wide variety of purebred dogs and their owners/breeders. MTB gives you a chance to interact with each specific breed and to ask questions to see if it might fit your lifestyle.

Meet the Breeds at the Kansas State Fair is scheduled for Wednesday, September 14, 2022 during the hours of 9am-6pm.
Check back in Summer of 2022 for a full schedule of events and demonstrations for the day!
